***** Cascada Basaseachi National Park ***
One of the least explored canyons of the Sierra Tarahumara and the last discovered by outsiders, Candameña Canyon is more than 1,737 meters (5,700 feet) deep. Part of the Mayo basin, it was formed by the Candameña River and is accessible from Creel or Chihuahua. Basaseachi Falls National Park (121 km,75 mi from Creel) has outstanding vistas and paths through pine and oak forests. Travelers with time and a sense of adventure can explore numerous lateral canyons, swim in clear pools and running streams, and soak in thermal springs throughout the canyon.
Sure, the statistics are impressive: the second highest waterfall in Mexico at 812'/246m. But, compared to the incredible beauty of Basaseachi Falls, statistics don't mean much. In addition to the falls, there is stunning Candameña Canyon and the beautiful river valley above the falls. The whole area is one of the prettiest places we have ever seen. Fortunately, it is also one of the few areas in the Copper Canyon that is fully protected under Mexican law.
